Maharashtra warns news channels
Mumbai: Television news channels showing old clippings of flood without mentioning it as 'file footage' and spreading false information may face trouble this monsoon, with the Maharashtra government deciding to take strict measures against such channels.
"Whoever spreads false information will be liable for a year's imprisonment or heavy fine, as per provisions of National Disaster Management Act," said State Relief and Rehabilitation Principal Secretary, M Ramesh Kumar.
"The Centre came out with the Act to tackle such incidents last year. It will ensure punishment for giving any false information about monsoon," he added.
The Indian Penal Code also has a provision to take stringent action against people spreading rumors, hoax or unsubstantiated news, Kumar added.
The police authority, Collector or any other nodal authority will have to bring it to the notice of the state government, about the TV channel misleading the people through news and action will be taken against it, Kumar said.
In every monsoon some part of the city is always seen flooded but repeated clippings shown on TV create an impression that the entire city is in a mess, he said.
It was observed that some channels still show the clippings of year 2006, when Mumbai was paralysed completely, without attributing it as a 'file' picture. But this time strict restriction will be imposed on them, another official said.
The state government is taking steps to ensure that people get correct information about rain and avoid any panic, he added.

Mathur filed three complaints against TOI's Desai, Special Correspondent Prashant Dayal as well as a photographer of ‘Gujarat Samachar.’
The police commissioner felt offended after the two ran a series of articles portraying him in bad light imputing his underworld mafia links. The articles questioned Mathur's integrity and said the city was not safe in his hands.

Shiv Sangram activists attack Loksatta editor
I stand by my editorial: Loksatta editor
Thu, Jun 5 08:47 PM
Unfazed by the attack on his house by Shiv Sangram activists, Loksatta newspaper editor Kumar Ketkar on Thursday said he stood by the opinion in his editorial about the statue of the Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Shivaji.
Speaking to the media after the attack, Ketkar said "The people who attacked me must not have read the editorial. I never said anything denigrating to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and I stand by my opinion on the proposed statue."
Entire Maharashtra respects Shivaji Maharaj and the column is not defamatory in nature, he said.
"I have merely questioned the importance being given to the statue of Shivaji while the state has other problems to tackle," Ketkar said.
Ketkar also said he knew Shiv Sangram President Vinayak Mete and has nothing against him personally. Mete, a former NCP MLC, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Seven persons were arrested in connection with the incident and have been booked under non-bailable offences, police said.
The irate activists numbering about 70 persons pelted stones damaging windowpanes after making an unsuccessful attempt to ransack the house in the morning.
